Venezia
We will board the train in the Cinque Terre this morning and head east
for Italy's other coast. Destination: Venezia! The city built on water.
We will have a walking guided tour and then 3 days to explore! You will
feel perpetually 'lost', but worry not. It's an island, and you can't
get lost! St. Marks Square is possibly one of the most famous squares
in the world with its 9thC Bell Tower, the Clock Tower and the old Law
Courts, and our day will begin at its heart. The feature of the square
however is St. Mark's Basilica with its Cupolas, arches and interior
walls encrusted with impressive dark gold mosaics. Some of the sights:
many famous bridges, including the Bridge of Sighs and the Ponte
Rialto, Doges Palace, and a prison.

If
we're "lucky" at some point, we'll see the famous flooding of the city
of Venice. It happens quite often and creates quite a mess, but it's
interesting to experience and makes for fun stories back home! If we
miss it, you can always buy a postcard! Overnight in Venice.

Day 9 |
Monday, June 19th |
Overnight Train to Salzburg
We depart Venice late afternoon and, for most of you, experience a
sleeper-train for the first time. Get as comfy as you can, get some
sleep, because we'll wake up and arrive at 6am in Salzburg, Austria.
For an extra fee, you may be able to reserve a First Class Private
Berth. Cool! Night trains move more slowly and quietly than a 'normal'
train to allow you to get some sleep. They aren't as 'comfy' as a hotel
room, but everyone should experience them at least once in your life,
and this will be your opportunity! And if you don't get quite enough
sleep, you can always go to your room for an afternoon nap. |
