We depart from Florence via train to the coastal region known as the Cinque
Terre. The name Cinque Terre translates loosely as the "Five Lands" and
consists of five tiny sea-front towns strung along one of the most dramatic
stretches of the Italian Coast. For centuries the towns were cut off from
the outside world and the only access to them was by boat. Today, some
villages still have no road links with the outside world but can be visited
by foot or train. After checking into our hotel we will spend the remainder
of the afternoon exploring the towns and coastal paths of this region.
